Slack analytics for private channels

Slack's built-in analytics tells you how many messages were posted and who was active. It cannot tell you what was decided, what is blocked, or what nobody answered — and it does not read private channel content at all. SignalOps does, in the private channels you invite it to.

Counts are not analytics

Slack's analytics page answers questions about volume: messages posted, active members, which channels are busy. That is useful for administration and silent about the work. A channel can be the busiest in the company and still be the one where a decision was made and then lost.

SignalOps reads the conversation itself and returns typed records — decisions, action items, risks and open questions — each linked back to the message it came from. The same reading applies to private channels, which is where the arguments that settle things usually happen.

What it can see, and what it cannot

A private channel becomes visible only after somebody invites the app to it, exactly as they would invite a person. Nothing is read before that invitation, and removing the app ends the access.

Direct messages are not included, and not because of a setting. The Slack app does not request the permission that would allow it to read them, so DMs are outside what it can access at all.

Does Slack's own analytics cover private channels?

It reports activity for them — message counts, membership, how busy they are — but never content. Nothing in Slack's analytics tells you what was decided or what is blocked inside a private channel.

How does SignalOps get access to a private channel?

Somebody invites the app to it, the same way they would invite a colleague. Until that happens the channel is invisible to it, and removing the app ends the access immediately.

Are direct messages read?

No. The Slack app does not request DM permissions at all, so direct messages are outside its access rather than a setting somebody could change.

Does it join calls or record anything?

No. It never joins a call and records nothing. It reads written conversation that already exists in the channels it was invited to.
